Newport 50th Anniversary – Day 1

To celebrate 50 years of the Newport Cycle Speedway Club, seven riders from Poole made the trip to Wales to compete in the action-packed weekend of racing.

First up were Aaron Laing and Alan “T-Bone” Nation, taking part in the Eurovets competition. This was Aaron’s first-ever outdoor individual event, while Alan brought his usual grit and experience. Aaron raced in the Over 40s category and impressed by qualifying for the A Final. Alan put in a superb effort to make the Over 50s B Final. In their respective finals, Alan claimed a fantastic 2nd place in a highly competitive field, while Aaron stormed to victory in the 40s A Final – an incredible achievement in his debut outing. Huge congratulations to both on their outstanding performances.

Next to take to the track in the Open category were Matt Mildon, Ollie Saunders, and Fez Langoo, joined by former Comet and double British Women’s Champion Maddie Saunders. The event featured a star-studded lineup, including the likes of Chris Timms, Paul Heard, Ben Mould, Pawel Idziorek, Ashley Hill, Leon Penketh, and Lewis Foxley.

All three Comets gave it everything. Ollie battled through a tough draw and never gave up, finishing on 8 points. Fez, despite a challenging set of races, secured two wins and ended with 13 points after a strong finish. But the standout performance came from Matt, who dominated throughout the day, finishing with 19 points and securing a brilliant overall victory – showcasing true discipline and determination.

The Comets did the club proud, with a fantastic showing all around.

Newport 50th Anniversary – Day 2

Day 2 of the Newport 50th Anniversary saw Millie and Tilly Shear take to the track for the Women’s Welsh Open. With a strong field of competitors, it was a challenging day of racing.

Millie rode consistently, finishing with 7 points overall, including two 3rd places and three 4ths. Tilly, the youngest rider on the track, gave it her all and gained valuable experience, finishing on 5 points.

Tough competition, but a great effort from both – onwards and upwards!

Poole Comets seniors will be back in action next Sunday, 11th May at 2pm, as they begin their National League title defence against strong contenders Great Blakenham of East Anglia. Don’t miss it!
