Poole vs Newport Match Report
South & South Wales Division 1
Poole Comets 95 – 82 Newport
Sunday 10th May saw the start of the home campaign for the Poole ‘Fantasy Floors’ Comets as they welcomed Newport Cycle Speedway to Harbourside Park from South Wales.
Newport fielded a very experienced side led by captain Lee Galley, alongside former British, World and current European Champion Ben Mould. They were backed up by Dan Bock, Chris Davies, Ryan Jones, Andy Yard, up-and-coming junior Kalem Martin and Nick Davies.
Despite the tough opposition, Poole also fielded a strong blend of youth and experience led by captain and World No.4 Fez Langoo. Joining him were Polish No.4 Greg Głuchowski, U16 Boys World Champion Teddy Curtis, GB international Ollie Saunders, Eurovets Champion Aaron Laing, super fast junior Jamie Randall, Liam Bartlett and Douglas Shear.
As the racing got underway, both teams looked strong with the scores level after the opening races. Newport edged ahead in Heat 3 after Teddy Curtis suffered a bike malfunction which caused him to flip over the handlebars. Fortunately, after some quick adjustments, Teddy was able to return to the track and continue racing.
The match remained tight until Heat 8 when the Comets struck back in style, with Randall and Głuchowski delivering a huge 7-3 heat advantage over Bock and Galley. Poole followed this up with a 6-4 from Curtis and Bartlett in Heat 9 to take control of the meeting, leaving the half-time score at Poole 46 Newport 42.
The second half began just as the first ended, with Poole continuing to hold onto their advantage through exceptional team riding. The Comets conceded just one heat disadvantage across the remaining nine races and capped off the afternoon with another superb 7-3 from Randall and Saunders to seal a 95-82 victory.
Despite being on the losing side, Newport’s Ben Mould was sensational throughout the meeting, remaining unbeaten and scoring a perfect 20-point maximum. Langoo finished with 19 points, while Głuchowski added an impressive 16+2
The Comets now take a short break from team racing at Harbourside Park, but attention quickly turns to the Whitsun Bank Holiday weekend when Poole Cycle Speedway Club hosts its famous and world-renowned invitational event — The Ade Gale Laurels.
