Poole Comets vs Newport – Match Report

Off the back of a fairly successful British Club Championships weekend in Ipswich, the Poole Comets returned to home soil after a string of away fixtures. This time welcoming the always-strong Newport side from South Wales – the very team that edged Poole out in the opening match of the season.

The Line-Up for Poole:

Captain Greg Gluchowski, Fez Langoo, Ollie Saunders, Jamie Randall, Aaron Laing, Lexie Curtis, Joe Chapman and Ava Chapman.

Newport fielded a powerful side including former British & World Champion and reigning double European Champion Ben Mould, supported by Dan Bock, Lee Galley, Chris Davies, Ryan Jones, Andy Yard, Harvey Yard, and Adam Bennett.

The early heats saw both teams trading blows in a series of level scores, before a power-packed 7-3 from Ollie and Jamie tipped the momentum in Poole’s favour. That was followed by Fez brilliantly holding off Mould with Aaron executing textbook team riding behind him to claim a crucial 6-4.

Half-time score:

Poole 47 – Newport 42

The second half mirrored the first, tight, tense and tactical. Four level heats on the bounce kept the margin slim until Newport struck back in Heat 14 with a big 7-3 to reduce the deficit to just 1 point (75-74). From there, every heat was make-or-break.

With a string of -1 infringements across the final heats (Bock in Heat 16 and Fez in 17), Poole’s chances hung by a thread. Going into the last heat just two points ahead, they needed at least a 6-4 to seal the win.

Intensity built with Jamie picking up a -1 for a gate infringement, both riders composed themselves for the restart and with Greg’s experience and Jamie’s determination, Poole pulled off a clutch 6-3 to take the victory by just four points in what was the tightest, most hard-fought battle of the season.

FINAL SCORE:

Poole 90 – Newport 86

Poole Scorers:

1️⃣ Feroze Langoo – 17+1

2️⃣ Aaron Laing – 11

3️⃣ Greg (C) – 20

4️⃣ Lexie Curtis – 6

5️⃣ Ollie Saunders – 13+4

6️⃣ Jamie Randall – 17

7️⃣ Joe Chapman – 3

8️⃣ Ava Chapman – 3

From lightning-fast gates to flawless team riding, this squad battled from start to finish. A huge thank you to Newport for a thrilling match and for a great contest across both legs this season.
